Guidelines
Detroit Stand Up is a monthly online magazine written entirely by Detroit-area comedians and people in the business of comedy.
We are currently accepting submissions.
Submission Guidelines
We will only accept submissions from Detroit-area comedians and people in the business of comedy, preferably people who've been involved in the business for over a year. Exceptions may be made for the occasional enthusiastic newbie whose writing blows us away. People who used to live in the Detroit area also qualify. We want this magazine to have a Metro Detroit feel to it - if you grew up here, then you know what we mean.
We are looking for entertaining writing. That's basically it. We will accept fiction or nonfiction. We are not looking for poetry at this time.
5,000 word maximum; if you have a piece that's over 5,000 words, please query before submitting. We prefer material that has not been seen elsewhere. If you would like to submit something that has already been published please let us know in your cover letter that it is a reprint.
All work (except reprints) will be published online in exchange for First North American Serial Rights and First North American Electronic Rights.
Reprints will be published in exchange for Reprint Rights. The only reprints we absolutely can't take are those that were already published for Perpetual Rights, because the original publisher owns your work, well, perpetually. -way to sell out on that one, by the way.
Payment
We believe writers should be paid well for their work. Like many of our other deeply held personal philosophies, this one is going to be difficult to work out in the real world. At this time, we can only pay $2 per piece, upon publication. Our staff contributors will receive $3 per piece, upon publication because they're working on a deadline and you're not.
Oh shit, I forgot to place a call for staff contributors
Staff contributors: here's the deal
We have two more slots available for writers who can contribute content on a regular basis - probably two or three pieces a month. So you can make up to $9/month on this gig, and since all payments will go through PayPal the IRS can suck it.
If you can write and you're in the business of comedy, send a writing sample to me at redalice734@gmail.com. Even if our staff slots are all filled by the time I get your submission, if your piece doesn't suck it might get you $2 and a publishing credit.
How to submit
Send all submissions to badger1@detroitstandup.net. Submissions should be sent in the body of the email or attached as .doc or .rtf files only. Seriously: send me a .pdf and I won't even look at it. I have Word, and I need files that can be easily edited in Word.
We want to promote comedy and comedians so if your article or story is accepted I'll ask for a brief bio, a headshot, and one or two upcoming show dates. Depending on how close to the deadline we are, I might need those quickly so be ready. Open mic dates are okay, since we need people to come to those too.
So, yeah
If you have questions, please contact me at badger1@detroitstandup.net or through my MySpace account, or come up and ask me out in The World.
