Dan Deacon is many things: electronic composer, party-maker, Pitchfork golden boy. That last part might throw you, but make no mistake: Deacon is no mere hipster-flavor-of-the-month, as evidenced by his sprawling, ambitious second LP, Bromst.

Preparing to raise money for people who need help paying their heating bills reminded me of my experience growing up in a household which could have used a heating grant or two.

I'm admittedly a late bloomer when it comes to concertgoing; except for family-sanctioned, childhood trips to see MC Hammer and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Live!), I didn't really start going to shows on a regular basis until my early twenties. I'm almost 30 now, and the novelty has yet to wear off. There's almost nothing I enjoy more than celebrating music I like with a roomful of strangers who like it, too.

This is my advice on how to do a better job as an open micer onstage. I know something about open mics as I do them and have run one myself for 3 years now. None of this pertains to any material you do. As an open micer, you have to figure out what is funny on your own. This is all about how you act at the club.
